Abstract
Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a consequence of backward movement of the stomach content to the esophagus. The symptoms are caused by irritation of esophageal mucosa by acidic ingestant. Various factors cause disorders of cellular defense mechanism that lead to significant increase of oxygen-derived free radicals concentration and as a consequence to pathological damage of tissues and development of inflammation. AimThe aim was to inquire whether different types of gastroesophageal reflux diagnosed by pH-impedance cause the increased concentration of oxygen-derived free radicals. Materials and methodsThe study group consisted of 128 children both sexes, aged 4–18 years, that were admitted to Department of Pediatrics, Allergology and Gastroenterology in Bydgoszcz with the preliminary diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Patients who received antisecretory drugs in the previous 2 weeks were excluded. The control group were 20 patients of cardiological clinic. The 24h pH-impedance was conducted during hospitalization in each patient. Every patient had routine laboratory tests and additionally concentration of oxygen-derived free radicals (11ml of blood). The results were statistically analyzed. ResultsThe study showed a statistically significant relationship between increased concentration of MDA i SOD in every group of patients diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Additionally in the group of acidic gastroesophageal reflux there was statistically significant difference in the CAT level. ConclusionThe clinical signs and symptoms are most important in the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease. The antioxidant treatment in patients with symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease should be considered.
