Abstract

Abstract This chapter explores how to write the Goals and Importance section of the research proposal, in which the author is asked to provide an overview of their project and describe their research idea or research goal. The central purpose of this section is to give reviewers a first glimpse at what the author proposes to do. In so doing, authors also provide relevant background information in their research area and highlight the importance of their work. Students describe a research idea in NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) proposals; faculty describe a research goal in NSF CAREER proposals. The chapter recommends that authors mirror the term(s) used in their targeted RFP (Request for Proposals).
