Abstract

This paper represents an introduction to an extensive geologic and geophysical data set recently acquired by Amoco Pakistan Exploration Company (Apec) in the Kohat Plateau and surrounding regions of northern Pakistan. This data set has given us a comprehensive understanding of the surface and subsurface geology of what has formerly been described as a classic foreland fold and thrust belt, and has lead us to the conclusion that northern Pakistan has been deformed through wrench tectonics, rather than purely compressional tectonics.
