Abstract

The effects of reaction time (Table 1), temperature (Table 2), propan-2-ol presence (Fig. 2), quantities of water present in the mixture (Fig. 3) on the properties of low-molecular weight epoxy resin were investigated. Principal criterion selected for evaluation of the resin properties was as high as possible content of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (EDGD) (or the smallest content of hydroxyl groups) and low content of oligomeric by- products (lower and higher). Optimal conditions of the resin synthesis were determined as follows: temperature 40degreesC, addition time 90 min, 5.5 wt. % of water in the addition reaction, 16 wt. % of 2-propanol as additive, using of 45% aqueous solution of NaOH. Chemical composition of the resin obtained was compared with the composition of commercial resin Epidian 6 (Table 3, Figs. 4-6) using GC/MS method. It has been found that carrying of the synthesis without its separation to addition and condensation steps let both eliminate the time- consuming process of the addition reaction product purification and minimize epichlorohydrin consumption.
