Abstract

A large number of skin care products and dressings are available to nurses to treat skin and wound problems. Nurses are challenged to know the major types of products and to use their own decision-making abilities to treat skin problems in the most efficient and effective way. The goals of skin care are, foremost, prevention. Once a wound is established, however, the goals are to keep the wound clean and moist to enhance healing. The nurse assesses the wound for stage, size, and characteristics. Based on the assessment, the choice of treatment method that will keep the wound clean and moist while being fairly easy, cost-effective, and successful in the shortest timeframe possible is the best option. Using the figure “Wound Treatment Options: Types and Benefits” will help the nurse to choose the best option.
