Abstract

A distinguished group of scholars gathered in Glasgow to pay homage to Lister on the 100th anniversary of his introduction of theAntiseptic Treatment of Wounds. Most appropriately, the centenary took the form of a series of programs relating to the healing of wounds by a group of authorities in that field. This book presents that symposium in printed form. There are four sections: "The Local Response to Injury," "Wound Infection," "The Constitutional Response to Injury," and "Wound Healing." Twenty-three chapters cover a variety of subjects, among them acute and chronic inflammation, tissue repair, the control of infections, nutritional and metabolic responses to injury, differential organ blood flow, effects of hyperbaric oxygen and hypothermia, and alterations in acid-base status. The final section considers more specifically the basic processes directly involved in repair. This work is devoted to basic investigation. There is little so-called practical information immediately applicable to patient care.
