Abstract

Sharon Baranoski and Elizabeth A Ayello, two well known authors and wound care specialists, have brought together an interdisciplinary team of experts to update this comprehensive handbook. This is a useful text for all professionals involved in wound care, including nurses, physical therapists, physicians and podiatrists. I was particularly drawn to the first chapter which advocates ‘treating the patient as well as the wound’. In my work as a community nurse, we can all too easily find ourselves losing focus on the person. The book provides practical and theoretical guidelines for assessment and management of common and atypical wound problems. This text is unique in covering many topics not sufficiently addressed in other books, such as sickle cell wounds, amputation, gene therapy and the specific wound care needs of special populations. This new edition adds to our knowledge of bariatric, paediatric, palliative care and surgical wounds, with extended coverage of certain skin conditions.
