Abstract

This article discusses the issues facing the future workforce generation, along with the realization that it is a global issue, not just a US phenomenon. The global water industry is facing a shrinking pool of talent to draw the workforce of the future from. Increasingly, informed customers, improved technology, and continued financial pressures on local governments will require workers to be more skilled and more adaptable in their work functions. In addition, managers will have to demonstrate more leadership to adapt to the complexities of the market, understand implications of regulatory changes, proactively communicate with the organization and the public, and interact with elected officials. The article presents opinions of the participants of the International Water Association's (IWA's) recent Utility Management conference in Barcelona, Spain. The European response to workforce planning is presented, along with the U.S. response.
