Abstract

More than one‐quarter of the world's coral reefs are at high risk and another one‐third are at medium risk because of threats caused by human activities, according to a new report that may be the first systematic and data‐driven global assessment of coral reefs. The report, “Reefs at Risk: A Map‐Based Indicator of Threats to the World's Coral Reefs,” indicates that these threats place much of the world's marine biodiversity at risk, because coral reefs are highly productive, species‐rich habitats that are home to more than one quarter of all known marine fish species.
