Abstract

Shortly before his death, Giovanni Agnelli, the legendary owner of Fiat, presided over the opening of a museum which brings together part of his personal collection. The museum, located in an old Fiat car factory in the suburbs of Turin, was designed by Renzo Piano. This article looks back at the two years since the Giovanni and Marella Agnelli Pinacoteca opened in September 2002. The location, architectural design and collection of the museum will first be examined. There follows an analysis of how the Pinacoteca is managed, which will lead to the questions of its sustainability and future developments. Finally, by determining the museum’s mission and functions, this article will shed some light on Agnelli’s motivation for building the Pinacoteca and what the future holds for it.
