Abstract

The paper analyses marine fisheries and its contribution to the supply of animal protein. The historical development of the sector is addressed. The paper reviews distant water fisheries, and the expansion of coastal State jurisdiction. The paper then examines the relative contribution of developed and developing countries to world fish production. The efficacy of current management approaches is examined, together with the implications of the controversy concerning production totals. The paper discusses the emergence of a holistic approach to fisheries/ ocean management, and concludes by outlining future programmes that will ensure marine fisheries a place in the global food equation.
