Abstract
This report deals mainly with the chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides. Detailed specifications are presented concerning DDT, BHC, gamma isomer of BHC, methoxychlor, chlordan, and dieldrin; pyrethrum extract specifications are also presented. There are specifications for water dispersable powder concentrates of DDT and dieldrin, and for emulsible concentrates of DDT, BHC and dieldrin, and for aerosols and solvent-pressurized dispensers. There are four Annex sections, dealing respectively with standard procedures for the determination of the chemical and physical properties of DDT, BHC, gamma isomer of BHC, methoxychlor, chlordan, and pyrethrum, for water-dispersable powders and emulsible concentrates; sampling methods; methods of testing aerosols and solvent-pressurized dispensers; and a tentative aerosol test method for flying insects.The report is of value to all organizations formulating or using these insecticides. It needs to be supplemented with a report on the problem of insect resistance to this group of insecticides, and by a report on the organic phosphorus insecticides as replacements where marked tolerance occurs.
