Abstract

In May 1987 the World Health Assembly, the governing authority of the World Health Organization (WHO), requested the Director-General of the WHO to study the possibility of developing appropriate internationally applicable guiding principles for human organ transplantation. In response, through the work of WHO officers and external consultants, the Director-General prepared draft Guiding Principles, which the World Health Assembly adopted in May 1991 [1].
