Abstract

Several years ago my wife attended an international peace conference in Vienna called by the Women's International Democratic Federation (an organization of women largely from the socialist-oriented countries). Among delegates from Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa, she met one from Albania, who interested her because the woman (a quiet self-possessed upstanding human being) gave a provocative and stimulating report, because Albania was an unknown country to Helen, and because it was out of bounds for United States citizens.This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
