Abstract

Any doubt that it's a one-world chemical industry should be dispelled by a look at its current economic status. Dimensions may vary from region to region, to be sure, but the general outline of business conditions is surprisingly similar wherever you look. The recovery from the deep recession of 1974-75 generated sharp gains in output and rising profits late last year and early in 1976. Since then, the pace has unexpectedly faltered just about everywhere. Synthetic fibers have been a universal disaster. Fertilizers, too, are a common weak spot. As for prospects for 1977, here too a common thread runs through forecasts. Worldwide, the outlook is for moderate growth shadowed by questions of too much capacity, too low prices, and too high costs.
