Abstract

Prevention and active control of hazards and exposure to occupational risk factors is gaining more and more attention. In factories and branches of industry a shift from passive surveilance toward active promotion of a health and safety care system can be observed. Measures to prevent these hazards and exposures are becoming an important part of a health and safety policy. In literature the development and introduction of preventive measures have been recognized as a problematic area. Methods for analyzing and designing effective preventive measures are scarce and information on successes and failures is inaccessible. The subject of preventive measures was important enough for the International Occupational Hygiene Association to dedicate a special workshop to this issue of Applied Occupation and Environmental Hygiene during the Brussels Conference in December 1992. Participants from Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, Sweden, Belgium, and the Netherlands attended this workshop, together with representatives from international organizations; the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Community (EC), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Technical Committee 114 of the Comite European de Normalisation (CEN). 6 refs.
