Abstract
What are the objectives of the hospital administration and the medical in establishing or maintaining graduate clinical training programs? It was felt that, in essence, graduate clinical training programs were an upward extension of medical education from the medical schools into the hospitals. About one-third of all internships and less than half the total number of residencies offered are located in hospitals making available outstanding educational experiences. Despite continued and concentrated effort, many hospital administrators, trustees, and hospital members have continued to place emphasis on the aspects of house training. It is admittedly difficult to render a precise definition of service. However, it was strongly felt that overemphasis of service to institutions or service to staff with considerably less emphasis on the basic requirement of furnishing an educational experience to the house members is undesirable.
