Abstract

This paper synthesizes evidence from Workshop 1 ‘Integrating rail and bus based modes (including BRT) into a user-relevant transport system’ of the 15th International Conference on Competition and Ownership in Land Passenger Transport. The paper outlines key findings from 13 research papers presented at the workshop which was structured into five separate issue or challenge areas including A. Perspectives on Intermodal Integration B. Perspectives on Intermodal Competition, C. User and Operational Perspectives on BRT System Performance, D. BRT Design and Development Challenges and E. BRT Implementation and Future Pathways. Based on the three-day collaborative workshop thinking, this paper synthesizes the outcomes of discussions around these topics. Overall despite a wide diversity of participants an overwhelming support for continued development of integrated transit systems was supported to better address the growth, social and environmental challenges of cities into the future.
