Abstract

The working mechanism of a suction ring and the mechanism in which a geometry of suction ring controls flow patterns inside a turbomachine and the performance of the turbomachine are clarified through the analyses of characteristics curves and oil-flow patterns obtained by the experiment performed with respect to an axial-flow pump equipped with suction rings of systematically changed geometry, the axial clearance from impeller blades, radial clearance from the casing and the length. A guide to determine a geometry of suction ring is presented.
