Abstract

After our house jobs and before the joys of membership and mortgages, my partner and I decided to leave the United Kingdom and take the mighty leap down under. It had always been our ambition to live and work in New Zealand. We had no trouble securing jobs in the South Canterbury region of South Island. Our New Zealand doctor friends told us that the hospital had a good reputation, and the hospital trust even sent us a promotional video. When we started our jobs as second year house surgeons we were instantly impressed with the hospital set up. New Zealand is a naturally friendly place and its health service—for patients and doctors—seems light years ahead of the NHS. We were acutely aware of this, having just been through the stresses and strains of the pre-registration house officer year in the NHS.
