1 For the purposes of this paper, Reformatory, Industrial, Day Industrial, and Truant Schools will be referred to collectively as the ‘reformatory system’. Industrial Schools will be abbreviated to CIS, and Day Industrial Schools to DIS. It should also be noted that this paper will not concern itself with the role of religious orders in the schools. The research for this study was funded by the ESRC, with grants from Balliol College, Oxford. Manuscripts are quoted with the permission of the archivists of the named repositories.
