Abstract

Industrialized society has been experiencing an attempt to substitute leisure and recreation for the nonexistent joys of work. This paper examines why this has happened and whether or not it has been successful. True leisure and true work are defined, and it is contended herein that the proper arena for true leisure is work. Why these natural companions have been separated and what societal changes must occur for true work and true leisure to be merged once again are also assessed.
