Abstract

Work-Life Balance is a popular catchphrase in the modern management vocabulary. The concept of a fair integration of roles and responsibilities at work and home has been doing the rounds in academic discourses and management practices for over five decades now. In the beginning, the focus of work-life studies was to unfold the inherent conflict between work and family roles. However, in recent times, the research question vis-a-vis work-life balance has shifted from conflict to integration, from deprivation to enrichment and from frustration to fulfillment. The researchers are now trying to figure out the reasons of work-life imbalance for corrective purpose, best practices in work-life balance programs of the companies, impact of work-life balance programs on employee productivity, performance, employee health and well-being, organizational effectiveness, etc. In this paper, the authors have tried to revisit the concept of work-life balance in the context of contemporary organizations, establish a rationale of work-life balance programs in a highly competitive world and provide a critique of the agenda of the top management to integrate work and life of the employees in emerging scenario.
