Abstract
Although the contracted hours of junior doctors have been reduced, many are working at greater intensity while they are on duty. Speakers at last week's junior doctors conference endorsed a proposal from the East Anglian regional committee concentrating on the maximum of 56 hours of actual work for all posts. After that attention could be given to reducing the hours of duty for non-hardpressed posts. Just reducing hours meant many doctors were working harder when on duty, Mr Andrew Hobart, a senior house officer in Cambridge, pointed out. But contracted hours were easier for managers to measure.
