Abstract
This study is among the few that attempts to explore the 'work engagement' phenomenon in the Egyptian higher education sector. The authors realise that engagement is a multi-faceted concept that is researched by scholars from different social research disciplines. The study's aim is to look at the subject of work engagement in order to identify some of its antecedents and consequences based on a literature overview and an empirical investigation. A survey of 275 academics in two Egyptian universities yielded results that support the study's hypotheses, demonstrating significant relationships between independent and dependant variables where work engagement constructs, namely, vigour, dedication, and absorption are found to predict in-role, and extra-role academic performance.
