Abstract

This paper is dedicated to the memory of the eminent bohemist, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Iryna Mykolaivna Mel’nykova. In the late 1940's corresponding members of the NAS of Ukraine F.P. Shevchenko (1914-1995), I.M. Mel'nykova (1918-2010) and P.S. Sokhan' (1926-2013) created “the Historical European Studies” Ukrainian academic school. Since 1991, S.V. Vidnyanskyj (Doctor of History, Professor, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) leads the aforementioned academic school, which is developing an interdisciplinary research direction of World History. With a view to coordinating efforts of this academic school’s representatives in studying current issues of European History, in 1975-1989 on I.M. Mel'nykova’s initiative the Institute of History published the “Historical research. History of foreign countries” interagency collected scientific papers, which at that time was the only academic periodical on World History in Ukraine. Nowadays, this academic school specializes in: developing the theory and methodology in European History studies; the History and current problems of European International Relations and Foreign Policy; the History of Ukraine’s and Ukrainian people’s international relations, in particular, coverage of the Ukrainian presence in the Central-Eastern Europe geopolitical space and in the cultural and civilizational space of Europe at large; Ukraine's foreign policy since independence, providing scientific basis for the European choice of Ukraine and studying its experience in joining the European integration process and creating a positive image for Ukraine worldwide, particularly, in the European Union; the Recent History and the European integration experience of foreign European States, in particular, of Ukraine’s Western neighbours.      Vidnyanskyj, S.
