Abstract

The term word is used here to signify an aggregate of sense data not only received but also aspiring to be understood, i.e., to be associated with meaning and sense. A word is a sensory aggregate fulfilling specific functions in communication among human beings: mainly synsemantic (sensory) and semantic, and derivatively expressive and eidetic (indication, appeal, order, complaint, request, etc.). A word is prima facie a message. A word consequently is a means of communication, and a message is a condition of communication. A word is not only a phenomenon of nature but also a principle of culture. A word is an archetype of culture; culture is the reverence of reason, and words are the embodiment of reason.
