Abstract
The study of word formation consists of analyzing the processes through which and the conditions under which neologisms are formed, including the concepts and cognition of language users. To establish a complete theory of Chinese words, it is also necessary to survey and research Chinese dialect vocabularies. A wider understanding of neologisms in Chinese dialects can help clarify how new Chinese words are formed. This study, which utilized data from field surveys, was the first to investigate word formation in the Hailu Hakka dialect in both Taiwan and China. Seven types of neologisms were identified and explored. The results can serve as a reference for all studies on Chinese word formation and as a foundation for a theory of Chinese vocabulary.
