Abstract

The qualitative and quantitative composition of the acid fraction of wood extractives from three Spanish Pinus pinaster Ait. subespecies (Atlantic, mountain Mediterranean and plain Mediterranean) and their evolution have been studied. Samples were prepared according to Techical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry Standards, extracted with petroleum ehter (b.p. 40-60º C) in a Soxhlet apparatus and saponified with ethanolic o.4N potassium hydroxide. The acid fraction was methylated with diazomethane and studied by combined gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The potential production of wood extractives from triturated wood of Pinus pinaster Ait. is evaluated.
