Abstract

AbstractThe term wood composites is a general one that describes a wide range of products having some combination of wood element(s) held together by an adhesive “binder.” The wood composites industry is growing rapidly from both a steadily increasing demand for existing products and an increasing demand for new products to be used in new applications. This article describes the types of wood elements and major wood adhesives that are employed by the wood composites industry today, and major wood composite products that are currently marketed. An overview of current research directions and the forces driving this research is also presented, including research into alternative adhesive systems, adhesive modifications, improved processes, and lignocellulosic alternatives to wood.
