Abstract

Postnatal depression (PND) affects around 13% of women (O’Hara and Swain,1996). It is a serious and debilitating disorder and one of the most common medical complications of childbirth. Healthcare assistants, assistant practitioners and maternity support workers (collectively referred to in this article as healthcare support workers) can expect to come across women with PND. This article outlines what PND is, what causes it, its impact, how to recognize it and the treatments available.
