Abstract

The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) is an NIH-sponsored, multicenter effort to evaluate therapeutic interventions in postmenopausal women. The arm of the trial that randomly assigned 16,608 women to receive either placebo or conjugated estrogens (0.625 mg/day) plus medroxyprogesterone acetate (2.5 mg/day) was halted in 2002 because hormone recipients showed increased risks for breast cancer, stroke, and heart disease (Journal Watch Women's Health Aug 7 2002).
