Abstract

This research identifies major themes in print media concerning women's victimization, fear of crime and gun ownership. The themes are compared with official crime statistics and nationally representative survey data to determine the extent to which the media distorts information on women's crime concerns and gun ownership. Data for this research were derived from The National Crime Surveys, The General Social Surveys, The Uniform Crime Reports and a content analysis of print media from 1989–1993. The results indicate that the four major themes in print media provide a distorted view of crime and guns among women. The nature of the distortions and the implications of inaccurate information are discussed.
