Abstract

A review of more than 250 grievances brought by academic women against their employers suggests that, although few suits have been won in the courts, the efforts have not been in vain. Grievances are traced through internal reviews, state and federal agency investigations, and the courts. Obstacles women encounter at each step are described and the outcomes, for individual plaintiffs and for their institutions, are summarized.
