Abstract

The recent increase of women in medicine has been phenomenal. Nevertheless, women are under-represented in administration and in other leadership positions. This book examines the past and present status of women practicing medicine, with a primary focus on women in psychiatry. Included in this volume are 35 articles edited by two respected women in the field of psychiatry, Leah J. Dickstein, M.D., and Carol C. Nadelson, M.D. (the first woman president of the American Psychiatric Association). The editors' goal was to show that women are competent and are ready to be leaders despite diverse leadership styles. I believe that they accomplished this goal, and I strongly encourage other women to read this unique book.
