Abstract

This bibliography is a compilation of books articles conference papers pamphlets and unpublished documents written between 1900-76 on women in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. It combines articles written in both regions and classifies articles into those dealing with change in roles and status and development and those describing or analyzing roles and status in institutions. Feminist perspectives have been incorporated for Latin America. Generally the Latin American literature evolves from a study of women in the familial context to a study of women outside the family. focus of research shifted from women in urban areas to women in rural areas and of lower classes. scientific approach has become analytical and political-economic rather than descriptive and social-psychological. In the literature research on rural women has shifted from a colonial perspective to an economic-anthropological one. Temporally the treatment of women and policy is concentrated in the earlier decades for Latin America and the later decades for Sub-Saharan Africa. Concern with civil rights of women appears in literature in the 1960-70s in Latin American in the 1930-40s.
