Abstract

Two recent reports highlight similar themes concerning the academic experiences of female US scientists. The National Council for Research on Women report that women's progress in medicine and the biological sciences is better than in computer science and engineering, partly because more women excel in environments that encourage hands-on research, mentoring and cooperation rather than competition. For these reasons, women scientists are more likely to come from liberal arts institutions and seek jobs there. A different study of liberal arts colleges and small universities indicates their number of natural science faculty members have risen at record rates, with the gender gap among new hires narrowing. In both studies, many women identified that balancing family issues played an important role in their career decisions.
