Abstract

In the dental profession, the percentage of women has not changed appreciably over the last 50 years. Today, about 3.5% of the nation's dentists are women. In 1920, 3% of the dentists in this country were women. This review will examine some of the issues as they pertain to women in dentistry and as they refer to these topics: the situation of female dental students and female dentists in this country; reasons why more women are not attracted to dentistry; and suggestions for recruitment efforts to increase the number of women in the dental profession.
