Abstract

HIS REPORT is the first in a series on American women in political leadership positions on the national and state level. Biographical information available on U.S. congresswomen will be examined in order to answer the following questions: 1. What experience did they bring to their offices in Congress? 2. How did they win their seats in Congress? 3. How satisfied was the electorate with them? 4. What happened to them after completion of their terms in Congress? 5. What are the trends in and prospects for women's representation in the U.S. legislature? The present report deals with the seventy women who have served in the twenty-four congresses between 1916 and 1964 from Jeanette Rankin, who was the first woman to be elected to the House of Representatives to the thirteen who have served in the 88th Congress.
