Abstract
AbstractThe role of women and the family in economic development in the Middle East has often been misunderstood. One reason for this has been Western ethnocentrism. The diversity of women's situations has been ignored, including their agricultural and craft labor, their labor in the home, and their assumption of the role of the household head. Thus development plans to benefit women and the family must take into account a wide variety of economic arrangements, and recognize the symbiosis between the formal and the informal economic sectors.
