Abstract

A 29-year-old postpartum woman presented to the emergency department with fatigue, anorexia, weight loss, and dyspnea. The patient was tremulous on arrival, and her vital signs included pulse rate of 123 beats/min, blood pressure of 146/106 mm Hg, and temperature of 37.3 °C. Physical examination revealed an enlarged, nontender thyroid. Pertinent laboratory findings after admission included thyroid stimulating hormone level of <0.005 μIU/mL, free thyroxine level of 8.77 ng/dL, free triiodothyronine level of >20 pg/dL, and thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin 300% of reference control (reference range <140%).
