Abstract

A fundamental structural element of Wolfgang Hildesheimer's Mozart is its critique of previous biographical practice. Hildesheimer attacks the wishful thinking, nationalizing fervor, careless method, and exaggerated pathos of other Mozart biographers. To counter the tendency to mythologize the hero, Hildesheimer applies to the facts a psychoanalytical insight and determined scepticism. The self-consciousness of his biography enhances its integrity.
