Abstract

The article is devoted to the functioning of the word war in the Polish langue. The author presents its etymology, evolution of its meaning as well as morphological affinities. In addition, he points to the most frequently used phrases, proverbs and the so-called winged words featuring the word war. The last part of the article is devoted to war-related metaphors in sport.
