Abstract

Pelts of the common three shrew Tupaia glis from Southeast Asia have been examined to determine the degree of seasonal variation and sexual dimorphism. Sexual dimorphism in the pelts occurred on the venter and was variable in expression. Two molting periods could be determined, one in the first half of the year and one in the latter half. The difference between the two pelts was varied, and the variation generally appeared to be correlated with the geographical distribution of the sample. Specimens from coastal sites appeared to exhibit minimal differences between the two seasonal coats, whereas specimens from inland sites molted to a dark pelt in May and June and to a lighter pelt in September through December.
