Abstract

The current study aimed to investigate the conception, emergence, and uses of Iwan as a unit in Islamic architecture and interior design. The study highlighted the problem of excluding Iwan from the current architecture and interior design practices in the Arab and Islamic countries despite its potential to cope with the ongoing development over history. The study relied on the historian approach to follow up the emergence of Iwan over the various dynasties along with adopting the inductive and analytical approaches to identify its conception, importance, and uses. The study findings revealed that Iwan was a key architectural element in the Islamic history and posses the potential to be implemented in the current architecture and interior design. Moreover, the findings revealed some ways to deal with the outstanding buildings that involve Iwan within their designs.
