Abstract

Abstract Forest degradation affects the social, cultural and ecological functions of forest. INPE annually processes satellite imagery to identify the deforested land cover through PRODES. In this paper, the remaining forest land cover is segmented separately through fuzzy soft computing technique. Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) technique is the predominant grouping algorithm in terms of segmentation effectiveness. Disadvantage of FCM is the colossal computational time required for convergence. In order to overcome the drawbacks of FCM, the unsupervised kernel based FCM algorithm with pixel intensity and local information (UILKFCM) for SAR image segmentation has been introduced.
