Abstract

Baghlan Province, Afghanistan, where I work as a Peace Corps nurse, lies north of the Hindu Kush Mountains, which bisect the country. It is an area of dust and sparse pasture lands; only the Kunduz River valley is green from the extensive irrigation system radiating through it. The village houses crouch against the hillsides, for every plot of arable land is precious. Although this is a predominantly agricultural community, food as well as fuel and water are scarce.
