Abstract

The title of this chapter refers to the Aristotelian concept of phronesis, elucidated in Book VI of The Nicomachean Ethics (Aristotle 2009, 2020). It is “a rational, truth-sensitive disposition that guides our actions with respect to what’s good for human beings” (Aristotle 2020: 142), based on “knowing the details of life” through the absolute pre-requisite of experience in order to determine what we do (Aristotle 2020: 145–147). It informs problem-solving, good decision-making and sound judgement by enabling us to conceptualize the appropriate overall goal of our deliberations and actions (Aristotle 2020: 149–150). It can therefore be most succinctly described as a type of wisdom that informs well-judged practical action.
