Abstract

The Bible’s alleged “Abrahamic anthropocentrism” has been much blamed in recent times for contributing greatly to our current ecological crisis. This discussion concedes that certain readings of the opening chapters of Genesis have fostered and nourished such anthropocentric religion. However, it also argues that these chapters are not best read in themselves in this way. Further, other biblical texts that have important claims to make about Creation, especially in the Psalms, clearly direct us away from anthropocentricism. Here the main focus lies on Psalm 104, which, in describing the created world, covers much the same ground as the Genesis cosmogony, and is therefore important in helping us not misread the latter. Overall, the Bible not only offers wisdom concerning human existence, but also for animals and the cosmos—for both ancient and modern times.
