Abstract
Although the concept of wisdom has been discussed for centuries within the humanities, it has become a current topic of scientific inquiry within aging and psychiatric research. Studies have suggested that wisdom is associated with the lateral prefrontal cortex and the medial prefrontal cortex, areas corresponding to functions of calculated, reason-based decision making and emotional homeostasis as well as pro-social attitudes, respectively. Additionally, six core components of wisdom have been outlined: pro-social attitudes and behavior, social decision making and pragmatic knowledge of life, emotional homeostasis, reflection or self-understanding, value relativism and tolerance, and acknowledgment of and dealing effectively with uncertainty.
